I have to confess: I devoured this book. The Bird and the Blade completely swept me away with its forbidden romance, fierce heroine, and a richly imagined world inspired by the legend of Turandot. (Seriously, I couldn’t put it down!) The ending? Let’s just say I wasn’t prepared for the emotional rollercoaster. AND I’m incredibly thankful this was a standalone because I wouldn’t have ever recovered. If you love historical fantasy with a touch of mystery and a whole lot of heart, this one’s for you.

Characters are what truly make a story come alive, right? And in The Bird and the Blade, they practically leap off the page! (And trust me, there are a few you’ll want to hug…and a few you might want to give a stern talking-to.) 😉
Jinghua, our fierce heroine, stole my heart from the very first page. She’s brave, resourceful, and incredibly loyal, even when disguised as a boy to survive. (Seriously, she’s my new role model!) And Khalaf? Swoon. This brooding warrior with a hidden past and a heart of gold had me hooked. But don’t get me started on Turandokht, the Ice Queen princess. She’s strong and independent, but also frustratingly stubborn. (I wanted to shake her and hug her at the same time!) And then there’s Tekesh, the ambitious prince who’s charming yet ruthless. (Definitely wouldn’t want to cross him!)
Jinghua
Jinghua is a survivor. She’s resourceful, brave, and fiercely loyal to those she loves. (I admire her strength and her determination to forge her own path.)
Khalaf
Khalaf is a complex character with a hidden past and a heart of gold. (I was drawn to his vulnerability and his fierce protectiveness.)
- Turandokht: Turandokht is a princess with a sharp wit and a tragic past. (I felt a mix of sympathy and frustration for her, but I couldn't help but admire her strength.)
- Tekesh: Tekesh is a charismatic leader with a thirst for power. (I found him intriguing, but ultimately, his ambition led him down a dark path.)
- Enkhe: Enkhe is Jinghua's devoted companion and confidante. (I loved their friendship and how Enkhe always had Jinghua's back.)
- Qorin: Qorin is a mysterious figure with a connection to the spirit world. (I found him fascinating and a bit creepy, but ultimately, he played a crucial role in the story.)
- The Khan: The Khan is a powerful leader burdened by responsibility and grief. (I felt sympathy for his struggles and the difficult choices he had to make.)
My Fave The Bird and the Blade Quotes
Just because she's one way doesn't mean you're the other, I try to tell myself. Her beauty doesn't make you ugly. Her intelligence doesn't make you stupid. Her value doesn't make you worthless.

World-Building
This book transported me to a breathtaking landscape of sweeping steppes, bustling Silk Road cities, and opulent Mongol palaces. (Seriously, I could practically feel the wind whipping through my hair as I rode alongside Jinghua and Khalaf!)
Bannen’s descriptions were so vivid, I felt like I was right there with the characters, experiencing the harsh beauty of the steppes, the vibrant energy of the markets, and the stifling tension within the Khan’s court. (And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to sneak a peek inside those lavish palaces?)
But it wasn’t just the physical setting that drew me in. Bannen also masterfully captured the cultural nuances of the Mongol Empire, from the nomadic lifestyle to the courtly customs. I learned so much about their traditions, beliefs, and struggles, and it made the story even more immersive and meaningful.
Overall, the world-building in The Bird and the Blade was a highlight for me. It was a beautiful blend of historical accuracy and fantastical imagination, creating a setting that was both believable and enchanting. (And trust me, it’s the perfect escape from reality!)
Plot Twists and Turns (and Maybe a Few Stumbles)
Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, Bannen would throw in a twist that left me reeling. (And maybe gasping out loud a few times. Don’t judge!)
From daring escapes and political intrigue to forbidden romance and heartbreaking betrayals, this book had it all. I was constantly on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next and how these characters would navigate the treacherous path laid out before them. (And let’s just say, there were a few moments where I had to put the book down and take a deep breath to prepare myself for the emotional rollercoaster!)
But it wasn’t just the twists and turns that kept me hooked. Bannen also masterfully paced the story, weaving together moments of heart-pounding action with quieter scenes of reflection and character development. It was a perfect balance that kept me engaged from beginning to end. (And that ending? Mind-blown.)

It’s a book that will make you think, feel, and question everything you thought you knew about yourself and the world around you. (And isn’t that what we want from a truly great story?)
